About

I’m Manuel, a 19-year-old tech enthusiast from Italy. This blog serves as my very own personal platform to write about web & iOS development, debloated and open-sourced tech, obsolete tech, and pretty much whatever happens to strike my fancy.

Wanna know the long story?

I was born and raised in Naples, Italy1. As a young kid, I was always nerdy and the fondest memories I have include me going to garage sales, buying old tech and tinkering with computers. I would go as far as installing Linux on them, and that’s what kind of sparked my geeky side.

During that time, in 2018, I had just started my studies in Ancient Greek and Latin — to this day, I think that intellectualism still remains central for me, but I quickly realized that I was more interested in technology and computers. That’s when I decided to switch my studies to IT & Telecommunications.

In 2023, less than a week after graduating, I took a flight to Malta and spent an entire summer there as a web developer intern in a FinTech. I completely fell in love with the country and I was convinced that I would settle there — but, yet again, things took a turn for me: I got accepted to the Apple Developer Academy2. At the end of my internship, I packed my belongings, and back to Italy it was. I learned a lot at the Academy, I met very cool people and, overall, it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Blogging

Some years ago, I had lots of different blogs for lots of different topics and areas: personal journals, school notes/essays, travel photos, and so forth, but they never seemed to work out: I would either forget about them or I would get too bored to keep them alive.

I have found what works for me, and I don’t expect this to change in the coming years. As of today, I only keep 2 blogs (plus a Tumblr.. should I even consider it as a blog nowadays?):

  1. A tech blog, literally this one; I used to write on BearBlog, but I decided to self-host and move everything to Jekyll. I like “having control” over my things, plus it’s just fun (or painful) to tinker with SSGs and Markdown.
  2. A personal journal, used to be on LiveJournal but I moved to its fork, Dreamwidth. You can take a peek, but most of my entries are set to private. I like Dreamwidth because it’s open sourced, very well maintained, customizable and there’s a lot of communities.

Notes

  1. Naples is the best city in Italy (<3). It is also world-famous for its pizza.

  2. The Apple Developer Academy is a year-long program where you go through a process of learning in three segments: coding, design and business, and it’s entirely focused on the iOS ecosystem.
